On September 15, Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell announced that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded nearly $500 million in Affordable Care Act funding to health centers for primary care services expansion.

With this grant, health centers’ recipients of this funding will be able to expand their primary care services to underserved patient populations, including medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy, and vision care. Secretary Burwell said, “With these awards, health centers will be able to do things like increase their hours of operation, hire more behavioral health providers, add dental facilities, better treat patients with opioid use disorders, and help people get coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace and make the journey from coverage to primary care.”

Nationwide, NextGen Healthcare provides Health IT solutions to more than 400 community health centers and we are thrilled that more than 100 NextGen Healthcare CHC clients received funding from this grant. Their patients benefit from our integrated ambulatory and dental solutions, enabling continuity of care for the provider and convenience for the patient.

This funding will enable CHCs to do a multitude of projects ranging from expansion of centers (additions or new locations), hire additional staff, and purchase equipment, including overhauling or enhancing their health and dental IT infrastructure. We are excited to expand our relationships within the CHC market and deploy more meaningful solutions such as Revenue Cycle Management (RCM), population health, electronic dental records (EDR), and more. Ultimately, the common goal of the healthcare communities we work in is to improve efficiency and support growth. We congratulate all of the HHS grant recipients and we extend an invitation to all CHCs who included Health IT needs into their grant proposals to reach out to us for conversation regarding their plans and our solutions.

At NextGen Healthcare, we know what a challenge it is to provide patient-centered care to underserved patients. That’s why we’re committed to helping you improve the efficiency and productivity of your community health center with our Health IT tools.
