On Oct. 25, 2016, Dr. Vindell Washington, the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, a small team from HHS, and vendor representatives from Carequality, NextGen Healthcare, Surescripts, and Epic, gathered in St. Louis to witness national interoperability in action using the Carequality Framework.
The Carequality Framework enables secure data sharing between vendor networks by bringing together a diverse group of representatives, including electronic health record (EHR) vendors, record locator service (RLS) providers, and other types of existing networks from the private sector and government.
One stop on the visit was to SSM Health, a Catholic, not-for-profit health system serving the comprehensive health needs of communities across the Midwest. SSM Health, using Epic’s Care Everywhere technology, successfully queried the Surescripts National Record Locator Service and retrieved clinical documents from NextGen® Ambulatory EHR clients using NextGen® Share.
One NextGen Healthcare client who has activated the Carequality / Surescripts NRLS is Signature Medical Group. “Signature Medical Group is excited that NextGen is adopting this streamlined, integrated approach to accessing clinical data from hospitals and external sources,” said Scott Paneitz, chief information officer of Signature Medical Group. “We believe our physicians will embrace this timely access of patient information to aid in making the best care decisions possible.”
As a Carequality implementer, and a participant in the Surescripts National Record Locator Service, NextGen Healthcare is committed to providing wide-reaching interoperability connections to physicians across the country. NextGen Healthcare clients can activate their connection to Carequality and the Surescripts NRLS for free using their existing NextGen Share account.
Today’s demonstration represents the best of cross-vendor interoperability efforts and it is patients who will benefit the most from these efforts.
